I worked at the BBC for 8 years. I am an accessibility specialist and work with people who have disabilities all the time. The BBC is a great employer for people with dsabilities - look at the Extend scheme they run every year. That's how I got my job with them. They are keen to employ disabled people and are keen to help as much as possible.

If you feel that you have not been given a job due to your disabilities then you have every right to use the law. That is what the Equality Act is all about. It is there to support people that are being discriminated against.

There is no point assuming that if you tick that box you will not get the job. I had long discussions about this with a clients recently because I was worried that the reason for asking that question on their jobs website was to pick people out - but in fact the reasons are usually the opposite.

Organisations want to employ people like you and I if we have the skills for the job and so they are trying to track how many disabled people are applying and if not why not etc.

Finally, again when I worked at the BBC I worked with a person with an number of conditions including epilepsy. At one point he did fit quite frequently in the office. All I can say is that I was very proud to work there because his colleagues were amazing, not patronising in any way and didn't mention it as a big deal at all.

Please don't lose hope :)Mighty Mousehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13549445551638807312noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4194113230379783244.post-54369272862178760332011-09-01T22:01:07.075+01:002011-09-01T22:01:07.075+01:00I'd be lying if I said that concern had not pa...I'd be lying if I said that concern had not passed through my mind too, and I'm very sorry to hear of your experience. Indeed these issues are one reason I have not used my real identity in my blog. I agree that ignorance is a huge issue, and I see that I'm at the beginning of an ongoing process of helping family, friends and colleagues to understand better. (And yay for our Spoonie friends for being there for you too!)

I remember when I made a similar realization. The best thing that happened was that I realized to the core of my being that I had to take care of myself differently. I needed to treat myself like I was sick, even when I felt good. That led to me having more and more good days. Now, I can mostly live like I don't have fibro... but it started with me realizing that I was sick. =)Tami Stackelhousehttp://www.myrestoredhealth.com/blognoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4194113230379783244.post-88732113174973904832011-08-19T21:48:22.569+01:002011-08-19T21:48:22.569+01:00That is very sound advice. And that is just one corner of one room. I can relate to your frustrations. Typically when one is healthy it is easier to thoroughly go through a room, closet, etc. etc. twice a year from corner to corner or from top to bottom but with chronic illness and fatigue, this isn't a possibility. We are left to pick and choose carefully where, when, how, and why to spend what little energy we have. One suggestion I was going to give you if you can afford it is to employ a professional organizer. Perhaps they could be your hands and you could sit in a chair and yes and no the items as they picked and sorted, etc. And again, if you can afford it, do hire a housekeeper. Some many people have said this is the best thing they ever did. It will allow you to spend what little energy you have left with your precious child and rightfully so.Deb aka AbcsOfrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12619087592028571941noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4194113230379783244.post-1572287262024556692011-07-27T11:55:20.169+01:002011-07-27T11:55:20.169+01:00Kary, I'm so sorry to hear you've been hav...Kary, I'm so sorry to hear you've been having such a tough time! Much of the discussion of the long process of getting to see a Rheumatologist seems to focus on the effect this has on disease progression and treatment outcomes, but not so much on the personal and emotional impact - and it is the hardest thing to find that you can no longer rely on anything you thought you could, at a time when you are least well equipped to deal with that. Of course, when faced with a 3+ month wait for a first appointment with a Rheumatologist, you are going to do whatever you can to try and help yourself! Every time I have a flare, I go back round that circuit of 'what else could I possibly be doing to improve things?' It is a real shame that the consultant was so dismissive of your efforts, and also a great pity that other therapeutic services are not better integrated. It has been my experience that the consultant treats pain and inflammation, the GP refills prescriptions, and any other therapeutic input or support, I've had to seek out myself. I am deeply grateful to the blogging and Twitter communities for the understanding and support they provide beyond the pure facts and mechanics of the disease. I have also found Arthritis Care very good, both on their helpline and in the literature they publish. Do feel free to find me on Twitter or Facebook (same name) if you ever want to chat - and that goes for anyone who might be reading this!Independent Womanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00902378606892230890noreply@blogger.com
